Dylan Roof

Predictably, someone is calling for the death penalty for Dylan Roof.

The crime was undeniably appalling, at every level.

But there is always a reason why death for death is not the right response.

I say the death penalty would validate the crime, by implying that the person committing the crime was not insane.

As usual, it’s the wrong response.

  1. How does the death penalty punish the offender? In my opinion death is not justice but a ‘release’. There are some offenders that are not phased by the death penalty – a form of state-assisted suicide. By my definition these offenders are not sane. Nor are the political leaders who believe they can solve social problems by executing offenders.
